A quick Google search for “freeze-dried products” brings up pages and pages of powdered strawberries, unappetizing-looking packets of pasta, and novelty astronaut snacks - but did you know it’s skincare’s best-kept secret?
When ReSET first came on the market, people were intrigued by our little glass ampoules, and it seems the rest of the industry is finally catching up to what we’ve known all along - freeze-dried products are better for both your skin and the environment.
So, now we’ve made sure you know how ahead of the trends we are (*wink*), it’s time to explain how and why it’s so good.
What is Freeze-dried Skincare?
Freeze drying is essentially the process of dehydration. By freezing the product, reducing pressure on it, and removing water, when it is brought back to room temperature, the product is dried - perfectly preserving the ingredients but with one important difference - the product's molecular weight is reduced.
What is reduced molecular weight, I hear you ask? Well, within skincare, the physical mass of the ingredient molecules is smaller - which means it can penetrate deeper into the skin and work more effectively.
The other added bonus of freeze drying is the lack of filler chemicals required (see our last blog post for more on this here). Several studies have shown that liquid cosmetics often contain P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli, and Bacillus species, as well as other bacteria, mold, and yeasts. Yuck yuck yuck.
Unlike standard liquid skincare formulas, our freeze-dried products completely eliminate the risk of microorganisms breeding in your products by removing the water content - which means no need for nasty preservatives, and the ingredients you do want on your face have a higher potency, and therefore a higher effectiveness. No nasties and better skin? Yes please.
Removing the water content also has the added bonus of the product having a lower carbon footprint. The skincare industry is notoriously bad for the environment - it is currently one of the worst polluters - producing more than 120 billion units of packaging every year globally. Freeze-dried skin care does not require special packaging to reduce the risk of oxidation, thanks to its zero water content, and is physically smaller, which means the transportation and production of packaging has a lower environmental impact. A win-win!
So, to summarize, I made a list:
Pros:
No filler chemicals
No preservatives
More effective
No gross microorganisms
Better for the environment
Longer shelf life
Cons:
I will never be an astronaut unless I marry Elon Musk 🙁
Freeze-dried skincare has come a long way since its invention - if you want to learn more about our products and how they work click here to see what our SETs can do for your skin.
